Covering that Gross Garage

Updated: May 5, 2021

My mother's garage was not that gross, but it was definitely not party-ready. As I mentioned in my last post, I saw these cute curtains from Pinterest.

However, I needed to take this idea and use to for all the walls of the garage. I wanted black and white since it would go with his college colors of black and gold plus his school colors of green and orange (Yuck, I know!).

I also wanted them pretty substantial so that I can maybe use them again in two years.

I saw some sites mentioned using duct tape and/or clothes line. We decided to use 1-inch pieces of wood with small hooks.

My husband screwed in small hooks in the wood and ceiling every foot or so. On one part of the ceiling where we had one of my son's banners, we had to make the hole a little bigger and use an anchor.

Once we knew the wood was hung correctly, we started attaching plastic tablecloths (54x108 in). We kept the tablecloths folded in half longways.

Attaching the curtains...

Starting on the right of the wood with the front-side facing you, staple the top right edge of the folded tablecloth to the right side of the board. Make sure the top of the cloth is even with the top of the board. Three inches from the right end, fold curtain towards the right. Then, staple on the left edge where folded.

Once stapled, flip curtain to left to cover staple and continue until you reach left end of tablecloth.

Before you staple the left end of the cloth, place new table cloth directly over stapled one. Match the left edge of new cloth with previous one. Staple left edge of both and then flip new cloth back towards the left, covering staple.

Continue on stapling every three inches until done with board. For a two-car garage, we used about 28 tablecloths. Other sites suggested taping the tablecloths together in the back, but we ended up leaving them open since they laid much nicer. We also needed to get to things behind them, especially in the third bay, so it looked like we were walking through walls. That's always a fun party trick:)

Lastly, it was very easy to trim the bottoms of the curtains with a razor blade along the floor.

When the party was over, we unhooked the curtains and carefully rolled them up. We are keeping our fingers crossed that our next child goes to a school that works with black and white.
